Mario Metal (Diecast) Figures

Compared to Pokemon, there are way fewer Mario related metal figures in existence. However, I’ve collected quite a few diecast Mario figures over the years and I want to share photos and info that’ll hopefully be helpful to other collectors. Please note that my focus is on officially licensed metal figures (statues) so I won’t be covering other metal items such as keychains, pins, coins etc. 

Metal Mascots

This first set of Mario “Metal Mascots” (メタルマスコット) was released in 1991 around the same time as Super Mario World on SNES and was manufactured by Japanese toy company Takara. 

There were only 3 figure types: Mario, Mario riding Yoshi and Cape Mario. Each figure was released in three colors – copper, silver and bronze.

The only other set of Mario Metal Mascots that I’m aware of was released WAY later (2009) as the Super Mario Bros Wii set. It was manufactured by Takara Tomy (Takara merged with Tomy in 2006) and consists of 10 different figures, each available in gold and silver finishes. I believe that this set was sold in Gacha vending machines.

Super Mario 64 Metal Collection

Japanese name: スーパーマリオ64のメタルコレクション.

This set of 12 figures was manufactured by Kyodo in the late 90s and came in blind boxes dispensed by Gacha capsule vending machines.
The figures were released in a large range of colors ranging from more natural metal tones such as copper, bronze and gold to other colors such as blue, green, orange etc.
I don’t have a list of all paint colors however they’re pretty much identical to the Pokemon Metal Collection colors which I covered in my Pokemon Metal Collection guide.

2004 Club Nintendo Gold Mario Statue

This small statue was available exclusively to Club Nintendo platinum members (back when that was a thing). I am not sure whether it’s made entirely out of metal or only metal plated. The packaging says it’s made of zinc alloy (metal) and ABS (plastic) but I don’t know if the plastic was only used for the base or for the entire figure. Nevertheless, it looks great and I’m glad to have it in my collection.

Monopoly Tokens

Worth mentioning because they’re pretty cool, these tiny pewter Monopoly tokens are detailed and unique. They were released by Hasbro in a number of different Nintendo themed monopoly sets. In addition to Mario, there are Zelda, DK, Metroid, Animal Crossing and Pikmin tokens as well.

USJ Mario Kart Collectible Trophies

Japanese name: マリオカート コレクタブルトロフィーフィギュア.

These small (2-3 inch) Universal Studios Japan collectible Mario Kart trophies are made of metal and are quite heavy for their size. I own one of them (the Banana Trophy) and it looks great, so I may get more from the set in the future. There are 9 in total and they came in blind boxes, with the Universal globe trophy considered a “secret” pull.

Speaking of the Universal globe trophy, a larger metal version of that one was also released in Japan. I don’t own that one either, but here’s a photo:

As for other Mario Kart trophies?
There’s a whole range of other Mario Kart trophy collectibles out there, but I don’t own any of them so I’m not sure if they’re made of metal or plastic. If anyone has more info about them, please let me know.

Bronze statues / trophies

So far I’ve (mostly) covered figures that I own. However, since I’m trying to cover all the official metal Mario statues in existence, I wanted to include these pretty awesome bronze Mario trophies I’ve come across.
Apparently, these were manufactured by the same company that produces the Oscar trophies in very limited numbers and only given to Nintendo employees. I will probably never own one of these due to the extremely high cost, but I wanted to mention them here. Obviously, these aren’t my own photos:

Mario Kart Hot Wheels (Mattel)

There are many Mario Kart Hot Wheels toys out there, but I don’t personally collect them so I won’t be listing or documenting them in this guide. Most of these toys seem to contain more plastic than diecast metal and my focus is on statues that are entirely (or mostly) made of metal. 
I did want to mention them though because they’re probably the first thing you’ll find if you search for “diecast Mario”.
